2012 Fishing Reports

February 20th

Our trout season opened February 15th but most anglers would wait a while before 'wetting a line', it gives the fish a chance to recover from the rigours of spawning, allows them to put on a bit of condition. Anyway, we're still in the throes of Winter relatively speaking and fishing is much nicer when the weather gets milder, especially fly fishing. Paddy's day or March 17th is often the marker to start. The Salmon season, likewise has opened on some rivers, but again it's usually well into April before we'd harbour any hopes of a 'fish'. February/March sees a lot of spent salmon or kelts still in the rivers and they take readily, nothing worse than hooking these already tired and emaciated fish, perhaps ruining any chances they have of recovering from the ardours of spawning and reaching the open sea with a hope of returning once more. Things are slow with bookings for the 2012 season, the economy here in Ireland is still struggling and the future does not look bright, a friend in the US tells me there are some signs of recovery there, let's hope he's right. Fuel prices have rocketed here in the past few years, my gas-guzzling Ford Ranger which has served me well for the past 5 seasons will have to be replaced, I'll wait until April and see how bookings are before taking the plunge for a fresher and hopefully less thirstier wagon.
